Broad Topics in Tech Podcasts — Part 4

Broad Topics in Tech Podcasts

Broad Topics in Tech Podcasts

The last and final part of web development podcasts. Previous parts are here: JavaScript & React Podcasts, Engineering & Open Source, Security & Mob Dev. This post is fully dedicated to subjects around web development, design, and IT in general. To come up with the following list, I used Tim Arney’s GitHub suggestions, expanded them, and added a few other podcasts, which community helped me discover on Twitter. If you have any other suggestions or would like to get featured in future blog posts, I strongly encourage you to reach out to me on Twitter. We are not expected to get paid, rather — contribute to the community and at the very least expect you to share the post on your social media as a sign of courtesy. Look forward to hearing from you, and let’s get started.

Add-on Stuff: shownotes, transcripts
Duration per episode: 50 min

Each fortnight the hosts discuss a part of a book they’ve been reading; they read books about web development, design, ethics, soft skills, and history. In the last episodes, the hosts discussed Code Girls, Ara the Star Engineer, The Imposter’s Handbook

There are several things I really like about the show. First, it’s the transcripts, and if there’s none for a particular episode, you can help by contributing at their GitHub page or make existing transcripts better and more legible. The second thing is that the podcast reminds me of a regular book club, where people read and discuss particular excerpts from the books, so you really feel yourself as though you’re being present during the conversation. The third, and final thing,  you don’t have to read the whole book (unless it’s tiny) to follow the talk, because each episode is dedicated to a small part, which you can surely read for a fortnight before the next episode.

Dain has two podcasts: one on general web development and another one on Ruby on Rails. The thing is, according to reviewers, Dain is a little too obnoxious. In any case, give it a try: there’re industry insights, interview and networking tips, etc.
